Tonight's the night.  Big anticipation.  Most of us will be getting together with friends and family to usher in the new year.  Some of us will be randomly hoping to hook up.  Others, going to sleep early.  Whatever you decide to do, make it safe, okay?

Michael Vick: Presidents Praise? Huh?!?

I have good news....its going to get warmer.  Seriously...its going to be in the 40's in the next few days.  Goodbye snow, you bastard. 

Sorry...had to get that off my chest.  I like to get my emotions out.  Speaking of expressing emotion...I have a video for you to watch.  It involves our President, Mr. Obama, and some things said about Michael Vick.

Good morning, near afternoon, everyone.

Besides getting loads of Christmas cheer and some crazy food passed my way this Christmas, I also received a gift that I'm unfortunately unable to return...a massive head cold and sinus infection.

That being said, I apologize for the lateness on the blog, but hey, I'm a trooper.  Snow, nor sleet, nor immense congestion can stop the plight of Stewie, so get ready for a sweet announcement.

Jack Frost has a sense of humor....

Good morning, everyone.

 If you live in the NYC area then by now you'd likely know that we've got a bit of snow on the ground this morning.

Snow.  Used to be the best thing in the world when you were a kid.  It closed school, it gave you an excuse to throw snowballs at people, and some would say it's "pretty."


As a grumpy adult, my opinion of snow has significantly changed.  Its cold, it prevents me from getting where I need to go, and I have to break my back shoveling it because I don't want to get sued when someone falls in front of my house.

Another challenge snow presents is by restricting your dog's mobility.  Now we all know dogs come in all shapes, sizes, and breeds, but some of the smaller dogs are really effected by the elements, especially several feet of snow.

We've been posting tips as how to safeguard your dogs from the elements (see prior blog entries) and urge all you dog owners out there, especially those will small dogs, to get out there with your pooch, shovel, and make their lives easier.  Keep an extra special eye out.  Jack Frost has been naughty.

Damn it, Santa, not a blizzard!

Morning to all.  Hope everyone enjoyed the holidays (and hope you still are if they're still going on for you).

For me, the last two days have consisted of hardcore family get-togethers and eating an abundance of food.  Way too much food.  Italians don't play. 

If you are ever invited to an italian family's house for dinner, pace yourself.  Never, ever, clean your plate quickly or you will be subject to berating and peer pressure to have more.  Even though I'm italian, I do often overlook this rule and still for whatever reason think I'll get out unscathed.  The very definition of insanity.  Too much food. 

Anyhow, if you've been listening to the weather reports in the NYC area, you'll know that we are theoretically due to get bombarded with a snow storm.  Generally, I take weather people's predictions with a grain of salt, but they are barking very hard about this one.

Is My Dog Sick?

Morning, everyone.  We're bearing down on Christmas and I know many people are scrambling for last minute gifts, getting their dinner menus together, and taking the next flight out of town. 

Bottom line:  everyone seems to be busy, even if you're not necessarily celebrating the holiday.  There's a rush of busy in the air.

With this kind of mode, we can very well overlook things in our immediate environment.  One such thing that we must pay close attention to, is our dog's health.

I know our furry friends do take up a good deal of our time, but sometimes if you're not paying attention, they could be trying to tell you something...like they're sick.

What am I saying?  Take a break and check out your dog.

I found an article that highlights some signs that would indicate that your dog is under the weather and I wanted to share it with you HERE.

Exorcising the Hum-Bug.

Hello and good morning.  I know each of us celebrate different things during this time of year, but as your Blogmaster General, I happen to celebrate Christmas.

Christmas is a holiday best enjoyed as a child, as when you get older things become more jaded and certain magics just don't appear anymore....at least not to me.

One also must note that I used to work in retail for almost 10 years and was hearing Christmas music in October. In addition, seeing the masses of people flood the stores, then more people come back bitching about the quality of their gifts takes its toll on you.  This kind of conditioning and experience can potentially make anyone into a massive Scrooge.

That being said, I'm trying my best to salvage this Christmas.  I have a new nephew celebrating it for the first time, I have a 91 year old grandmother still going strong, and I'm not working retail anymore....so I want this Christmas to be a good one.

I happened to be exploring online and came across this relevant and topical holiday article in regard to dog owner's tree preferences and some holiday safety tips.  I am a big fan of opinion polls and statistics, so I found it interesting.

The Week Ahead....

Good morning and a very happy Sunday to you.

So last night I got dragged out to seeing the new Reese Witherspoon movie.  Generally, I'd avoid her movies like the plague, but I was out with a friend and am working on my control issues, so I decided to give it a try.

The movie itself was filled with stars like Jack Nicholson, Paul Rudd, and Owen Wilson, but they couldn't make it watchable.  I don't think anyone could.  It was a 2 hour snooze fest of cutesy romantic "what if's?" and convoluted business tripe.  It was no Saw 3D, in other words (just kidding).

Let's just say, I could've used the time I spent better.  Speaking of which....

I'm looking at this week and seeing some home holidays down the pike, but right before an amazing event on Wednesday the 22nd.

Now I know what you're thinking.  These guys are really pushing this event hard and all that...but there is a reason behind it.  We NEED your help.  Actually...both WE and THEY need your help.

We've had a good amount of SUCCESS STORIES,  but we can do it alone.  We need the people's support in helping us continue our mission and that's where you guys come in.

So, that being said we have an amazing night of comedy in store for you this Wednesday that will ultimately go to helping some great animals.  Come down, laugh, drink, and get into the holiday spirit knowing that you are making a difference in an animal's life.

Why We Matter

All animal rescues are important.

Let's get that out of the way first. Spending time, and often our own money, trying to save animals (and speak on their behalf), is doing God's work. There's no doubt about it.

In that respect, it's silly to "rank" the various rescues on some "Importance Scale." But I will say, if there was such a thing, Stewie to the Rescue, would rank extremely high. Why?

We don't only help rescues with their dogs (by providing funding for medical care and training), but, we help pet owners keep their pets.

How are we doing this? We work with the Low Cost Vet Mobile that is stationed outside the Manhattan A.C.C. twice a week and the Brooklyn A.C.C. once a week.  I visited them a few weeks ago. Here is my blog about that visit...

The owner has told me that many times, the people who can't afford his already discounted medical treatment (which is 25 to 35% of a regular vet), end up surrendering their pet to the shelter. Since these pets are sick, surrenders (so the shelter knows no one is going to come looking for them), and at least middle aged (making them harder to place), they are often immediately killed.

So, not only has the pet died, but the owner has lost their companion and family member.

While we take pride in helping rescues keep animals alive, we take special pride in keeping animals alive AND with their family. We are helping people too.

"F - YOU", Michael Vick!!!!

So, here anything interesting in the news lately?  Anything that really caught your ear?  Um...well we have.

Heard of a guy named Michael Vick?  Football player.  Guilty of viciously torturing dogs and abusing them and making their lives hell on earth?

Ring a bell?

If all of that, him getting off of the charges essentially, and him getting reinstated so he can resume making millions of dollars playing football doesn't piss you off enough....CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO.

Okay?  Are you sufficiently pissed now?

I am.  I can't see how you couldn't be.

That smug, piece of s*&t just sits there and with a straight face says that he'd love to have a dog again?  Are you serious?!?  Really?!?

It's like Jaws being forced to undertake therapy then requests a human swimming buddy to help him get through his rehabilitation.

Immediately after viewing the interview I thought that the boundaries of reality had snapped and time and space had crumbled apart, but then the true horror was, it didn't.  This was real.  Unbelievable!!

I know its the holidays and all, but am I wrong in hoping something really bad happens to you, Michael Vick?  Something really...really bad.

Good morning and once again, Happy Hump Day, everyone.

Hope everyone is having a great week and doing their best to stay warm, despite the arctic-like conditions that have been thrust our way by Mother Nature.

Michael Vick is not welcome in many places, especially E-Street

Good morning and a very happy Monday to all our friends and readers.  Hope you had a fantastic weekend and are enjoying the holiday season thus far.

This morning's blog is going to seem somewhat repetitive in nature, but I (Carl) haven't really tackled the subject that fully or really given my opinion on it in absolute terms, so, cut me a drop of slack, okay guys? lol.

I'm an avid Howard Stern listener.  Some love him, some hate him.  That's all good.  This is America and we're given the ability to choose.  God bless it.

Anyhow, as I said, I'm a big fan (and very happy he signed an extended 5 year deal with Sirius) and was listening to the other day as he was speaking about an article written by musician Nils Lofgren from the E-Street band (the guys who back Bruce Springsteen) regarding Michael Vick.

Howard has stated numerous times he's against Michael Vick and started reading Nils' article on the air.  It caught me as pretty interesting and I thought I'd dig it up for you folks to read and give your opinions about.

Speaking for myself (Carl), I think Michael Vick is a piece of s*&t and should be rotting away in a jail cell somewhere.  The guy, despite whatever nonsense excuses somewhat might dig up about him regarding his background, knew what he was doing and because of his "Celebrity" status and football skills has been given a pass.  Its bulls*&t, plain and simple.  If he was a mediocre player he'd be in jail and nothing but an afterthought.

That's my two cents.  What's yours?

Bad Reputations breed poor treatment for Pits'

Ever have a day where you just don't want to get out of bed?  Today is that day for me.  After a night out and the sampling of an adult beverage that tasted incredibly delicious, yet packed a massive punch, I lurch over my keyboard and hope to pump out a winning blog on this soggy Sunday.

Coffee is not helping, nor did the sleep, but I'm a trooper.  I just took some vitamins and am getting my brain warmed up as I write....almost there....okay.  Now I'm ready.

So...you know how Pits' get a bad rap in the news and such?  Well, I stumbled on an interesting little quiz online that challenges the user to pick out the Pit. 

More often than not, other dogs are confused with Pits' and because of this, the breed's reputation has been wrongly tarnished.

An article of interest.....

Good morning, everyone.  Hope you had a fantastic night out last night.  I spent mine sucking down Nyquil and blowing my nose...then ultimately passing out on the couch.  I am a party animal, no one may contest this.

One Stop Holiday Shop....

Morning, all.  It's Friday.  We made it.  Just a few more hours and most of us will drift into the happiness of what is the weekend, while others (our friends who work in retail, especially) have the honor of catering to a hoard of weekend shoppers looking for holiday deals.

The holidays are upon us.  A very happy Hanukkah to friends already in the midst of celebration and a shout out to any of our friends celebrating any other holidays, too.

Christmas is right around the corner and I just happened to be exploring the internet (as that's what I do when I don't want to leave the house to face the cold) and found an interesting video on youtube.com.

The weather outside is frightful.  Really, it is.  I know from the last two days I'm starting to sound like some sort of demented, blog writing weather person off their meds, but there is a method to my madness.

A joke for your Hump Day (Pun totally intended)

Happy Hump Day, folks!

Just for any of you who haven't been outside yet...its still cold.  Consider this your weather report.  Forecast for later?  Cold.  Ha.

So, I woke up this morning, checked some emails and who did I get one from other than Stewie's founder and resident funny man, Harris Bloom.  Harris passed along a joke he happened to like and I shall now pass it on to you....

A dog lover, whose dog was a female and "in heat', agreed to look after and house her neighbors' male dog while they were away on vacation. She had a large house and believed that she could keep them apart; but as she was drifting off to sleep, she heard awful howling and moaning sounds, rushed downstairs and found the dogs locked together, in obvious pain and unable to disengage as so frequently happens when they mate.

 Unable to separate them and perplexed as to what to do next, although it was late, she called the vet, who answered in a very grumpy voice. Having explained the problem to him, the vet said. 

"Hang up the phone and place it down alongside the dogs. I will then call you back and the noise of the ringing will make the male lose his erection and be able to withdraw".

"Do you think that will work?" she asked.

"It just worked for me. " he replied.

Love Beyond Sight and Sound....

Good morning.  You made it.  Monday is way over our shoulders and now we're ready to face the rest of the week.  Kudos.  We knew you could do it.

This morning as I sipped my coffee I found a really great story online.  It involves hearing impaired children who receive a visit from a very special hearing impaired dog, who just happens to be able to interpret hand signals and other non-verbal cues.

This article reminded me of my grandmother's poodle she had for over 14 years named Cindy.  Cindy was attacked by the neighbor's dog and lost the majority of her hearing, yet she adapted and responded to several non-verbal cues and probably was one of the smartest dogs I've ever experienced.  Great dog.

Our New Pet Cause

ANYWAY, I visited the mobile vet unit outside ACC (Animal Care and Control) on Saturday.

Even though it was 35 and windy, there were a bunch of people milling about with family members and dogs (though dogs are family members). I hung out on the perimeter of the group, watching as every few minutes someone emerged from the back of the vet truck, clipboard in hand, calling out another name.

I struck up a conversation with a gentleman, there with his wife and his dog (mutt). He told me he didn't know what they would do if not for this service, as there was no way they could afford a regular priced vet. When I told him my reason for being there, he got a little weepy, thanking me, and even wanted me to take five dollars (I refused - anyone waiting two hours in that weather to see a low-priced doc shouldn't be giving me money)

The next time the assistant came out to call another dog in, I told the guy who I was (ahem) and after alerting the doctor*, he re-emerged and directed me to come in.

I met the doc, and his four assistants, all cramped in the trailer. He told me they've already seen over 2,000 dogs this year. In the summer, he and his team worked sometimes from the crack of dawn till 2 AM. He said it's getting more popular as the word is being spread.

He charges bare minimum (for example, $25 for the visit - my vet charges three times that), but some people don't even have that, and while he can eat the 20-25 bucks for meds if someone doesn't have it, he cant afford to eat the 500-750 that surgeries cost (which is waaaay cheaper than any vet would charge). When I asked him, he said there are about 20-25 cases like that a year.

Welcome to the "M" word.

Monday.  Garfield hates it and he's a cat.  Monday...the return to the work week.  Monday....not my fun day. Whatever the case, its Monday, and we want to wish you a happy one today. 

We can get through this together.  Lets just drink a few cups of coffee and optimize our positive thinking.  If that doesn't work, just call in sick and strike the day from the record (kidding of course...maybe).

Help is a great four letter word.....

A hearty good morning to all of our friends.  Its a crisp Saturday morning that's ripe with momentous possibilities.

You can throw on the old winter coat and go to the park.  You could get a posse together and accept the challenge of shopping at your local mall.  You can watch Netflix, order chinese food, and be a shut-in all day.  So many options.

Another option could be lending a helping hand.  As you folks probably know by now, Stewie to the Rescue aim's to make a difference and and we couldn't do it without your support.  You are the life-blood that makes the Stewie body tick and we more than appreciate that.

That being said, we are often asked by friends and supporters what can be done in helping us with our mission.  Well...there are a few things:

• Come to our fundraisers and bring your friends – We make it fun to donate by sponsoring trivia nights, wine tastings, and monthly comedy shows, where the proceeds go towards funding our mission. Please join our mailing list on our home (link) page to find out about upcoming events!
• Donate an item for one of our raffles – We raffle items at many of our events. It’s even tax-deductible!
• Volunteer to foster - Stewie will pay for all of the pet’s expenses, including food, toys and grooming! Write us at stewietotherescue@gmail.com if interested.
• Create and run a fundraiser.  Are you an artist or photographer who can create portraits of pets?  Do you manage an event space?  Know someone who owns/runs a winery? Again, contact us at stewietotherescue@gmail.com with your ideas.

Murally Offensive?

Morning and T.G.I.F, everyone.  The week has finally crawled to a near-close and the weekend is peeking around the corner.  Thankfully.

America's Most Hated....

I have something to admit.  This something can be construed as somewhat shameful, but I feel in writing this blog, I need to be honest....I like professional wrestling.

There...I came out and said it.  I've watched it since I was a kid, and still check it out from time to time as an adult.  This is my guilty pleasure and now my public shame.

If you've ever watched pro-wrestling, you'll come to find that there are the heroes (good guys) and the villains a.k.a. the heels.

The heels' job is to get the people in the audience to hate them.  They say horrible things.  They commit horrible acts.  They essentially make the heroes lives a living hell.

They do all this with the hope that people will hate them.  They want to hear the "boo's" and rants.  They revel in it.

Of course, most people (including myself) realize that pro-wrestling is mapped out and predetermined.  They know what they are doing.

In the game of life (meaning reality) the ultimate heel we have as animal lover's is Athlete turned animal abuser and defiler, Michael Vick.  He didn't do what he did because he was trying to be hated, he did what he did because he's a disgusting human being and in truth, really didn't want anyone else to know what he was wrapped up in.

The difference between Michael Vick and the world of pro-wrestling is that Michael Vick is genuinely hated.  Its not his "character", but him himself.  The heinous acts he's committed, the atrocities he's managed to get away with, he is nauseating and I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Forbes' list gives him the dubious honor of being the most hated athlete (to view article, go to: http://www.ajc.com/sports/michael-vick-tops-forbes-554412.html) and if you do any kind of search for him online, you'll likely see an abundance of disdain.  It is unavoidable, but very deserved.  VERY deserved.

Three Day Too Late (Sorry Daisy)

I got an email from someone whose dog was ill, but she couldn't afford to take him to the vet. I offered to pay via Stewie to the Rescue and she gave me the vet's name and number so I can make payment arrangements.

As it turned out, this woman had also asked people on Craigslist to help and some other kind person had already called to pay. But I got to talking to the vet.

He runs a low cost operation which isn't publicized, due to an agreement he has with NYC (it helps keep people who don't REALLY need a low cost vet out). He told me that for example, a surgery that may cost $1500, he does for $700. He operates a few of these mobile units on various days of the week. There are usually lines of owners with their animals outside, waiting to be seen.

Due to financial constraints, he can't do lower his prices any more than he has, which can become a problem when an emergency comes in, last this past Friday.

Daisy's owner had read on the Internet that while you can't give a dog chicken bones, you can him them beef bones. They were obviously wrong, and thanks to the "treat" they gave their dog, shards of bone were impacted in her intestines. Immediate surgery was necessary, but they didn't have the money, so they went home.

The doctor got a note on his car the next day from the owners, thanking him for his help, but Daisy died during night.

If I had spoken to him three days earlier, she'd still be alive.
